Welcome Lopez Parents

We can only be successful educating our Lopez students to become the leaders of tomorrow when we have support from home.  Whether you volunteer on a weekly basis, or only occasionally meet with your child's teacher, you are supporting our students by making that home and school connection.

If you need to get in touch with your child's teacher, please refer to our Home page, Contact Lopez, or Classrooms (to find teacher and grade level websites).  For additional information, please utilize the pages specific to parents (hover your mouse over "Parent Information" in the left-hand menu to find out more).  We welcome questions and/or any feedback you have to offer!

  • Pixie Home Edition
Pixie is used by millions of students at school -- now there is a Home Edition.  Pixie Home Edition is a trimmed-down version of Pixie that provides an affordable ($19.95 on Amazon) way to continue the learning at home! Research shows that Pixie improves student achievement at school. Promote the same great learning at home over the summer!
  • Pixie Parent Guides
To help avoid the summer slide this vacation, Tech4Learning is giving away cross-curricular guides for parents with specific and practical Pixie activities to do at home with their child.  Explore the Guides
  • 5th Grade Students & Parents:  Excitement about the STEM Institute is growing!
A note from STEM Organizers:  We are excited to be able to offer classes June 4–8 at Preston and Webber and June 11–15 at Preston and Lesher.  For our middle school programs we will be able to offer transportation between the schools if your student would like to take classes at different schools. We will transport them during the lunch hour, but the student will still have plenty of time to eat also.

Oceanography Camps are offered both weeks at Preston.  This is an all day, week-long class that will “dive” deep into the field of Oceanography.  The students will work on college level simulation labs, dissections, and also spend the night at the Denver Aquarium.  We are proud to have Amy Guerin from Louisiana teaching this class.

We are still taking application for the Oceanography trip to California and the Science of Entertainment trip to California.  I have attached the poster for the two trips if you would like more information, but please note that we have extended the “Deposit Due Date”.  These are amazing experiential learning opportunities that will be chaperoned by PSD teachers.  Amy Schmer will be chaperoning the Oceanography trip again!

If Science Olympiad is your thing, we will be hosting a Science Olympiad camp up at Pingree Park the week of June 25-29.  This is a residential camp that will go deeper into Science Olympiad activities.  You can work on your skills for next year’s competitions or you can come as a first time participant.  We already have applicants from CA for this camp!  You can find more information about this and register on the STEM Institutes web site.

We will also have the STEM Institute at Pingree Park.  This will be our Mountain Ecology Camp at Pingree.  This is a sleep away camp the week of June  11-15.  The students will be studying animal behavior, forestry, astronomy and much more.  This is not just another ECO Week!  The courses at Pingree are taught at the high school and college level!

For more information, feel free to contact Susan Salz, Preston Middle School, at 488-7303 or email ssalz@psdschools.org.  Please see the flyer for more information and locations.

Announced December 2011: Lopez Elementary named recipient of
Colorado Governor's Distinguished Improvement Award
The Governor’s Distinguished Improvement awards are given to schools that demonstrate exceptional student growth. On the school performance framework that is used by the state to evaluate schools, these schools “exceed” expectations on the indicator related to longitudinal academic growth and “meet or exceed” expectations on the indicator related to academic growth gaps.  Click here for more information.
