Lopez TCAP Scores Among the Highest in PSD

Our 3rd grade reading TCAP (formerly CSAP) assessment results have arrived, and Lopez has demonstrated three years of consecutive growth!  Last year Lopez scored a very impressive 93%, compared to the PSD goal set at 85% proficient or advanced.  This year, our students scored an incredible 95%!  Sustained success like this truly is a group effort.  We appreciate the hard work our students are accomplishing every year.  Additionally, 3rd grade scores reflect the work that begins in Kindergarten, and then continues through the primary grades.  This achievement would not have been possible without our dedicated teachers, parents, and community support; thank you!

Lopez First Graders Synergize For a Good Cause

The first graders in Ms. Maher's, Mrs. Schuetz's, and Mrs. Weaver's classes raised $95 for the Caps for the Cure.  They were also fortunate enough to have 30 hats donated from Zephyr's, compliments of the Delgado family!  Our First Graders are also mentioned on the Facebook page for "Caps for the Cure."  This really is an example of students synergizing at their best!  Way to go Lopez Leaders!

Lopez's Owen Geiss is a Mini-Me Reporter on Channel 9

During W.I.N. (What I Need), Owen worked on an interview that he ended up submitting to 9 News.  Because of his enrichment at Lopez, Owen was able to take advantage of this great program.  Based on his interview, Owen won the opportunity to shadow Channel 9's Greg Moss!  Watch the video below to see his news report.  We may have a budding business reporter on our hands.  Way to go Owen!

Fifth Grade Student Honored at Masonic Temple

Beau Van Der Sluys was selected as our Lopez 5th grade student of the year. Students from across the district were recognized at the 48th Annual Masonic Lodge Public Schools Night on the evening of May 1st, with classroom teachers and school principals in attendance.  Beau consistently demonstrates the Leader in Me 7 Habits among his peers and our younger students.  Congratulations Beau!

City of Fort Collins Plants Trees at Lopez for Arbor Day

Thank you to the City of Fort Collins Forestry Division, Platte River Power Authority, and Poudre School District for their generous donations of time and funds to help Lopez celebrate Arbor Day.  We are proud to have received 11 new trees, and to help the City continue the 34 year tradition of being a Tree City U.S.A.!  After a great assembly, all the students were able to visit their grade level trees, and help add mulch.  Thank you to our special guests, and our student leaders.

Lopez Loves our Volunteers!

Picture
April 16-20 was Volunteer Appreciation Week in Poudre Schools.  We thank our community and parent volunteers throughout the year, and Lopez recognized this appreciation week with a breakfast in their honor.  Our community member and parent volunteers, through their servant leadership, teach our Lopez students to be Leaders Today... Leading Tomorrow.  Congratulations to Nicole Knauer, the Lopez Elementary Volunteer of the Year recipient.

Mrs. Brennan's Class and Houska Automotive Change for Change

Picture
Mrs. Brennan's Fourth Graders have recently begun a study in philanthropy.  Mr. and Mrs. Houska visited class to talk about philanthropy, and presented them with a challenge: raise as much money as they could by collecting people's change (Change for Change).  The money will go to help build a kids and teen wing in a new cancer center being built right here in Fort Collins.  This center will provide state of the art treatment to cancer patients in Fort Collins.

In teams, the students took cans to classrooms and challenged Lopez students to help them raise money for this cause.  In just over 10 days they collected $387.15. Houska promised to match the money raised up to $500. They were so impressed with the class' success that they matched efforts with the full $500!  On April 18th, they were able to give the Poudre Foundation $887.15!  All of this money will go towards the new children and teen wing of our own Fort Collins Cancer Center!!  Awesome!

Next, they will be volunteering for Live @ Lopez, then moving on to individual service projects in May. We'll keep you posted!
