Homework Guidelines

_We encourage students, at all grade levels, to have a set time and place each evening for homework.  If there are no specific assignments, the time could be spent reading, reviewing spelling words, memorizing math facts, or playing educational games.  Any educational activity encouraged by families is productive.  Parents have an important role in working with their children to support their learning process through practice skills taught at school. Please review the following suggested homework activity guidelines with your child.

Kindergarten – 10 - 25 minutes per evening
10 minutes-reading aloud either to a child or with a child.  10-15 minutes of various activities:  Practice reading decodable books, practicing letters, sound and sight words (Zip, Pop, Go), playing math number card games and rhyming games using rhyming books

First Grade – 15 - 30 minutes per evening
15 minutes or more-reading independently or with a parent/guardian. 15 minutes of various activities:  Practice spelling and review no-excuse words and high-frequency words, and/or practice addition/subtraction math facts and play math games

Second Grade – 20 - 35 minutes per evening
15-25 minutes of oral reading to a parent or independent reading.  10-20 minutes of addition/subtraction math facts, math games, and/or spelling review

Third Grade – 30 - 45 minutes per evening
20-30 minutes of independent or oral reading to a parent.  15-25 minutes of spelling, subtraction/multiplication math facts, and/or other special project assignments

Fourth Grade – 40 - 70 minutes per evening
40-60 minutes of core curricular homework.  10-30 minutes of additional independent reading for enjoyment and/or review of multiplication/division math facts

Fifth Grade – 50 - 75 minutes per evening
